Computers had already become the wave of the future, but not a lot of people understood how they worked or what to do with them when they broke. Buying a computer was confusing and those brave enough to build one would spend several weeks figuring out what to buy, where to get it, and how to put it all together. If your computer broke, it was time to take it to one of the local computer stores for a repair. Unfortunately, the computer repair experience was often a horrible. The computer repair staff would talk down to customers, charge an arm and a leg for simple repairs, and even make fun of people who tried to fix the problems themselves. Those types of experiences are why Cheaper Than A Geek was born.
